If you have Crossbow Expert and are only using your bonus action attack for the hand crossbow, two weapon fighting style is redundant and you'd be better off going with defensive fighting style, Archery fighting style, or protection fighting style (if you've got repeating shot and a shield, and really want to help protect a squishy friend). Also, TWF doesn't work with the hand crossbow because it isn't a melee weapon. TWF doesn't get to add the (likely) dex modifier to the bonus action attack without two weapon fighting style while the Crossbow Expert bonus action does. Second, since you only get one bonus action, you have to choose between Two Weapon Fighting and Crossbow Expert. Being able to equip a shield is another reason to get one set up. Setting up one hand crossbow with repeating shot so you can wield a Shortsword or similar for OAs.

You still need a free hand to load and getting two hand crossbows set up for repeating shot is pointless since you don't get any benefit from doing so (aside from the visual!). So you're better off with just one hand crossbow and the mastery featįirst, loading. So you would not get the bonus action from the feat as well, it's one or the other. Off hand weapon attacks use your bonus action. It sounds to me like you're misunderstanding the action economy and bonus attacks. My idea was to get hold of some self loading hand crossbows and be able to do 5 hand crossbow attacks every turn by 11th level (extra attack + the bonus action in crossbow wielder) Hope you have fun with your hand crossbow, I think they are really cool weapons. say 6 each before having to be reloaded with bolts. Lastly, you might be able to work with your DM to find a way of making or acquiring hand crossbows that self-load for a set amount of shots. then drop one as a free action so that you have a free hand to load and attack in the following rounds of the fight. The best way to still get that cool moment when you have one in each hand is to preload them so that in cases where you first enter a room or chamber, or first appear around a corner or from the bushes, you have one in each hand and can fire them both. You do need a free hand to actually load the ammunition into the weapon. Some people confuse not being hindered by the loading property with actually not having to actually load the weapon with bolts. and if you have an extra attacks feature (such as fighters get at 5th level) then you could attack 3 times. Since it is a light weapon itself you can use the same light crossbow to attack once then ignoring the loading property and using your free hand to load the weapon, fire again as a bonus action. The wording of the feat does allow you to fire a single hand crossbow multiple times though. Yes, you can, but although you can ignore the loading property of the weapons so that you can fire any one of them more than once in a turn if you have multiple attacks, you still have to actually load them which you can't do if you have one in each hand.
